Interpretation, pulse, and sonic exploration of the vibraphone in Linda Catlin Smith’s Invisible Cities (1982) - Breanna Stewart & Brydone Charlton
Invisible Cities (1982) by Linda Catlin Smith is a solo vibraphone work shaped by her fascination with pulse and instrument acoustics. This lecture-recital explores how Smith’s influences—like Jo Kondo, Morton Feldman, and John Cage—inform her intuitive, flexible compositional style. We examine how performers can use this context to guide interpretive choices, highlighting the vibraphone’s unique sonic qualities and the collaborative nature of the piece’s creation.
Vers une écriture instrumentale collaborative: Quelque part… le cas d’une pièce pour percussion et électronique - Joāo Catalão and Simon Chioini (Performed by the University of Montreal Percussion Ensemble)
Doctoral student Simon Chioini and percussion director João Catalão present Quelque part…, a co-created work for percussion and electronics exploring human-environment relationships. Developed through improvisation sessions, the piece blends acoustic and electronic sounds, percussive and continuous textures, and spatial scenography. Their talk will trace the creative process from workshop to performance, highlighting how improvisation shaped the music and staging. The piece will be performed by six percussionists exploring space through sound and movement.
The Space Between the manuscripts and performance: Carter’s Eight Pieces for Four Timpani
Careful study of Carter’s original manuscripts can dramatically alter the interpretation of several of the pieces. We will look at the
published versions next to the original MSS and consider how their differences might change the way you perform these iconic
pieces in the solo timpani repertoire.
