Special presentation by Denis Martin - Recording percussion: assembling a variety of production techniques to form a flexible sound aesthetic

This presentation explores production techniques drawn from recording practices across multiple genres, ranging from Western classical to popular music. “Main microphones,” which are set up to faithfully capture sound from the performance space, will be contrasted against multi-microphone setups that typically demand extensive post-processing. I propose that both classical and contemporary percussion production can benefit from flexibility, resulting in sound aesthetics that are varied and uniquely appropriate for a given artistic work. The presentation will be divided into three parts. First, we will delve into the technical background, leading to a discussion with the Architek Percussion Ensemble centered on selected works recorded between 2013 and 2020. Ensemble members will share their perspectives on the recording process and resulting sound aesthetics. Finally, we will include a walkthrough of a recording setup to capture the ensemble’s evening performance at The Space Between III.

Effortless and Relaxed Playing Through Yoga Alignment Knowledge - Matthew Lau

Muscle tension and soreness are common for percussionists—but they don’t have to be. This session shares how yoga can improve alignment, reduce pain, and support more relaxed, efficient playing. Based on personal experience, the presenter will guide participants through stretches and poses that target areas percussionists often find tight or sore. No yoga experience required—everyone is welcome. A brief Q&A will follow.

Adapting the Drum Circle for Research, Recreation, and Rhythmic Reinforcement - John Beck

This hands-on workshop will demonstrate how HealthRHYTHMS group empowerment drumming was adapted for research with stem cell transplant recipients, review the research study results, and explore the benefits of group drumming for community building, wellness, teamwork, and strengthening ensemble awareness in rehearsals.
